55. The Pinnacles Desert
The area is home to thousands of aged limestone columns. Some pinnacles rise as high as 3.5m above the yellow sandy base. Some pinnacles are much higher than their width and look like columns—a sign of the name Pinnacles.
Some pinnacles look like short tombstones and are only about a meter high and a meter wide. Many pinnacles have a cross-bed structure. The angle of the deposited sand changed abruptly as a result of prevailing winds while the limestone beds were being formed.
Pinnacles with mushroom-like tops are formed when the calcium capping of the calcrete is much harder than the layer of limestone underneath. The softer lower layers of the calcrete layer are subject to weathering and erosion, with the top layer eroding faster than the lower layers and leaving more material on top. – Australia Places
