Swanpool Beach is backed by Swanpool Lake, a secluded nature reserve and SSSI, with a large brackish pool that is home to a variety of wildlife, including a family of primitive microscopic animals known as Bryozoa and over 100 species of birds.
The lagoon was once joined to the sea, then split by a sandbank. In 1826 a culvert was constructed to reduce the water level in the lagoon, resulting in a combination of sea and freshwater, creating the unique habitat that exists today. – Jamaica Places
