In the early 1900s, Alfred Mitchell of Salem, Connecticut visited Port Antonio, where he met his future wife, Annie Tiffany, the heiress of the Tiffany fortune. Annie and Alfred fell in love with Port Antonio and in 1905 purchased land on Folly Point. Alfred and Annie built an elaborate home on the plot of land, modeled on the Roman villa.

The mansion had 60 rooms and marble floors. Glass windows and wooden doors adorned the house. It also had some of the most modern conveniences available at the time.
